Privacy Policy
Last updated: September 27, 2026
This Privacy Policy explains what information the ModaScan mobile application ("ModaScan", "we", "our") collects when you use it, how that information is used, and the choices you have. We've written it to be readable. If anything is unclear, contact us at the address below.
1. What we collect
1.1 Photos you scan
When you take or upload a photo to scan an item, the app sends it over HTTPS to our server. Our server passes it to SerpApi, which runs a Google Lens search for products that look the same, and to Google Gemini (a Google AI service), which describes the piece (brand, product, color, category) and compares your photo with the photos of the listings found. We use the results to name the piece and to find shops that sell it.
- Photos are transmitted over HTTPS.
- We do not store your scan photos on our servers, unless you choose to send one with feedback (see 1.5).
- SerpApi keeps the uploaded photo available for about ten minutes, long enough to run the search. Its handling is governed by SerpApi's legal terms and privacy policy.
- Google's handling of the image is governed by their Gemini API Additional Terms and Privacy Policy.
When you scan with a short video instead of a photo, the app sends the clip, including its sound, directly to Google Gemini, which is asked only to describe the fashion piece in it. Our server then receives the piece's description, not the clip, to find shops that sell it. We do not store the clip.
1.2 Account information (only if you sign in)
ModaScan supports sign-in with Google and Apple. If you choose to sign in, we receive:
- Your email address
- Your name (if shared by the provider)
- A unique provider-specific user identifier
You can use ModaScan without signing in: guests get 10 free scans. Signing in lets you keep scanning and syncs your wishlist across devices.
1.3 Scan history and wishlist
Your recent scan history and saved wishlist items are stored locally on your device using secure on-device storage. If you sign in, your wishlist is also synced to our backend so you can access it across devices.
1.4 Scan counts, scan records and error reports
To keep ModaScan fair and its costs in check, our server counts scans: per installation of the app (the app makes a random identifier when it is installed and keeps it on your device), per account when you are signed in, and per network (IP) address. It stores only scrambled codes (hashes) of these identifiers, next to the number of scans.
For each scan, our server also keeps a record without any identifier: the time, the result (for example the house and model it named), how long it took, how many searches it used, your language and country setting, and the app version. We use these records to measure how accurate and how fast ModaScan is.
If the app runs into an error, it sends an error report: the error message, where in the app it happened, the app version and the platform. It contains no photo and no identifier.
We do not use third-party analytics SDKs, advertising trackers, or behavioral profiling tools.
1.5 Feedback you send
Under a result you can tell us whether ModaScan named the right piece. We store your answer, the result it was about, and any note you write. Only if you switch on "Send the photo" do we also keep that photo on our server, where we use it to test and improve the scanner. It is never published. To have a photo you sent deleted, contact us and tell us the day you sent it.
2. How we use this information
- To identify products: your scan photo goes to our server, SerpApi (Google Lens) and Google Gemini, as described in 1.1, and we then look up the shops that sell the piece and their prices.
- To deliver the app's core features: saving wishlist items, showing scan history, syncing across signed-in devices.
- To keep the service fair: counting scans as described in 1.4, so that no single person or program uses up the searches everyone relies on.
- To improve ModaScan: the scan records, error reports and feedback described in 1.4 and 1.5.
- To provide customer support: if you contact us, we use the email address you write from to reply.
We do not sell or rent your data. We do not use your data for advertising or behavioral targeting. We do not share your information with anyone except as described in Section 4 below.
3. Permissions we request
- Camera: required to take photos for scanning. Used only when you tap "Scan" or open the camera.
- Photo Library: optional, used if you choose to scan an item from your existing photos, or set a profile picture.
- Microphone: optional, used only while you record a short video to scan. The sound goes with the clip to Google Gemini, as described in 1.1, and is not stored.
You can revoke any of these permissions at any time in your device settings. Without camera access you can still scan photos from your library.
4. Third parties we share data with
We share specific data with the following services only as needed to deliver app functionality:
- Google Gemini (image and video analysis): receives your scan photo, or the short video you scan with its sound. Google's Privacy Policy.
- SerpApi (image and shopping search): receives your scan photo to run a Google Lens search for products that look the same, and product names to search Google Shopping. SerpApi's legal terms.
- Google Sign-In (optional): if you sign in with Google, your Google account information is shared per Google's terms.
- Apple Sign In (optional, iOS only): if you sign in with Apple, your Apple ID information is shared per Apple's Privacy Policy.
- Our backend (api.modascan.ffstage.com): receives your scan photo and passes it to SerpApi and Google Gemini, as described in 1.1. It does not store the photo.
5. Data retention
- Scan photos: not retained by us; sent to SerpApi and Google Gemini for analysis and then discarded. The exception is a photo you choose to send with feedback (1.5).
- Scan counts: daily counts are deleted after three days; a guest's count of free scans after a year without scanning.
- Scan records: deleted after 180 days.
- Error reports: deleted after 90 days.
- Feedback, and any photo sent with it: kept for up to two years.
- Scan history: stored locally on your device, automatically purged after 30 days.
- Wishlist: kept until you remove items or delete your account.
- Account data: retained while your account exists. You can delete your account at any time.
6. Your rights
You have the right to:
- Access the information we hold about you.
- Correct any inaccurate information.
- Delete your account and associated data.
- Export your wishlist data.
- Object to processing or withdraw consent (where applicable).
To exercise any of these rights, contact us at the email below.
If you are in the European Economic Area, United Kingdom, or California, additional rights under GDPR / UK GDPR / CCPA apply. We honor these rights regardless of your jurisdiction.
7. Children's privacy
ModaScan is rated 4+ in the App Store but is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us with personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
8. Security
We use HTTPS for all network communication. Local data on your device is stored using the platform's secure storage APIs (Apple Keychain on iOS, EncryptedSharedPreferences on Android). No security model is perfect. If you discover a vulnerability, please contact us responsibly at the email below.
9. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy when we change how the app handles data. Material changes will be highlighted in-app or via email (for signed-in users). The "Last updated" date at the top of this page always shows the current version's date.
